Like Terry Gilliam at his most surreal, directing a reimagination of Hansel and Gretel.
After 10 years, Hansel Nothing returns to his boyhood home, unable to remember anything that has happened to him since he left. Back home, he stays in Zerostrata, a treehouse in the backyard. The Nothing family is as dysfunctional and depressed as ever. His mother keeps a cat on her head and incessantly munches prescription medication. His father has left the house to pursue a career as a superhero. His brother wants to be the dad's superhero sidekick and thinks he can fly.
Hansel's life is changed forever when he meets Gretel, a free-spirited woman who runs naked through the woods every night. She teaches him about a world of magic and beauty. They travel to the moon together via a rope ladder, sail back to Earth in an air balloon, and wander through a graveyard that allows them to view the dreams of the dead all while trying to escape Gretel's evil Grandmother.
Zerostrata (Audible Audio Edition) Andersen Prunty Atlatl Press Books
Depressed 20-something Hansel Nothing returns to his mother's house to recapture the zest for life he had in his childhood. It's just as he remembered it. His dad has run away to become a superhero, his brother hasn't left the house in two years, and his mother is addicted to prescription drugs. While sitting in his tree house, Zerostrata, he notices a naked girl running through the woods and immediately knows his life is going to get better...I didn't really know what to expect from Zerostrata but it exceeded my expectations by parsecs. It's part modern day fairy tale, part Royal Tenenbaums. Hansel's family are sure an interesting bunch, from his brother wanting to be their father's superhero sidekick to his mother having a friend stay with her, to the crazy therapist Dr. Blast. It very much has the feel of a Tim Burton movie.
Hansel himself is the most interesting character, a character who can't remember much of his past, unsure of his pace in the world, and longs for a return to childhood. I sure didn't expect to identify with a character in a bizarro novel but here we are. When he meets the naked running girl, Gretel Something, you know things are going to turn out okay.
Zerostrata is short and sweet and would make a good first Bizarro for someone. It's not intimidating and no one gets sodomized with anything. Easy five stars.

Zerostrata (Audible Audio Edition) Andersen Prunty Atlatl Press Books Reviews
For dreamers and lovers who forgot how. In my experience, a lighter side of Prunty, yet still filled with his unique worldview.
So good and so spiritual in a sense. I loved it. Every time I finish a story by Prunty I am left with a sense of loss and of hope and wonder. Wow. He never ceases to impress.
When I read reviews describing the book as bizarre, I don't think I expected it to be quite so strange. At the same time though, the utterly absurd elements were inserted so casually and seamlessly that I hardly even questioned them, like I was dreaming the whole thing. A beautiful love story that doesn't make a whole lot of sense but ultimately didn't need to.
My only reaction to this book was "meh". It was flashy and confusing, but in the way that makes you suspect the author is doing it through a sheer emo-ish depth seeking (wait, that's the shallow end! don't jump!) - or was doing it on purpose so you don't notice the lack of content. Like a fast-paced action movie, "meaning" isn't required - but I really thought that this guy was going to work out his life through these dreams. I must have missed it.
Zerostrata is a true work of surrealism. It moves with opium-haze speed and irrefutable illogic of some wonderful dream. While nothing in Hansel Nothing's world seems real, it all seems realistic; even trips to puffy pillow moon on a rope ladder.
It is a series of fortuitous events strung together to comment on families, childhood, growing up, love and loss. The book washes over you and permeates your dreams. You will find yourself in the fantastical titular treehouse. You will see naked women running in the rain.
This story is touching, familiar, strange, sexy and innocent all at the same time. A delightful read for anyone who wishes for a modern fairy tale.
I honestly do not know how to describe this book. Maybe as a dream? The story DOES have a plot, but that's not the best part. The best part is the surreal, meandering quality to the story. Truly bizarre things happen, but it's all very mellow and understated, in a way -- you know that everything is going to turn out just find, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I'm not sure what it all means -- jeez, I never do with these bizarro stories -- but I absolutely loved the style. There are so many gentle, lovely elements here, and one of the sweetest romances I've ever come across.
I would highly recommend this, but not only for fans of bizarro -- this would be a great book for anyone who is happy to immerse themselves in a story that doesn't conform to a traditional, plot driven narrative.
In "Zerostrata", unsung Bizarro hero Andersen Prunty has created something truly beautiful. A dreamlike mixture of fairytale, love story and surreal humor, "Zerostrata" is an unexpectedly tender offering from Mr. Prunty.
The main theme of the novel seems to be the search for happiness. Suddenly finding himself in a bleak, depressing adult world with no recollection of how he got there, Hansel Nothing is desperate for something to bring to joy to his life. All the while, Prunty paints a stunningly accurate picture of depression, frustration and longing. Throughout this, though, is an unstoppable, if frequently subdued, positive force that drives Hansel forward.
"Zerostrata" is, at heart, a love-story, albeit masked somewhat by the surreal events surrounding Hansel. But when it comes to honesty, Prunty scores on all levels. Buy "Zerostrata". Love "Zerostrata".
